Take It...Or Toss It

Weeding:
Issues & Ideas

Weeding provides additional shelf space in cramped quarters.
  • Space for new books
  • Space for face-out shelving (consider the cover art)\

Weeding should be scheduled once every year - not fit in "when you have the time."

Considerations for Weeding

  • Condition
    • Remember a well-worn book is a sign to readers that the book has been read by others (potential stamp of approval)
  • Appearance
    • Many classic titles have been reprinted in paperback with new, modern covers
  • Circulation
    • Books that are not being read are wasting your space
    • Suggestion: 1 circulation every year
  • Awards/Classics & "Names"
    • Consider exemption from general criteria or use modified criteria
      • 1 circulation every 2 year
  • Availability
    • With ILL in Suffolk being what it is, consider how often you really need a specific title right, then and there.
  • Trial Run
    • Go through the weeding process but don't discard the books right away just in case someone needs it.
      • Set a specific waiting period & discard if still unused.
  • You are the YA specialist in your building - you are judge & jury but if in doubt...
    • Post a question about a specific title to YouthNet
    • Call me for help - remember, it's my job to help you do yours!

TAB Ongoing Project

  • Let your teens pull the books to consider weeding
    • You still have final say
      • Create a "pre-weed" form
        • Include space to note the reason for consideration
        • Require two or more teens to request review
        • Leave space/options for final decision
      • Provide circulation statistics - or not!
  • Show TAB the books to be weeded
    • See if they find anything worth keeping
